Unholy Alliance: Five Reasons Why Christian Nationalism is Destructive to Democracy

(5 minute read)

There’s been a lot of conversation about Christian Nationalism (CN) recently. Some dismiss it as a fringe movement, not a “real religion,” and not worth worrying about. I firmly believe it’s far more powerful and harmful than many of my red-state friends care to admit. I see it influencing white evangelical churches in troubling ways—where indoctrination often replaces critical thinking and compassion. I know. I was raised that way.

In the CN world, theology and politics are so tightly fused that questioning the ideology can feel like questioning God.

The Five:

  1. Cloaked in Righteousness: CN doesn’t just say, “We think our country should be a certain way.” It says, “God wants it this way—and we alone know what that looks like.” Who is “we,” anyway? That framing shuts down critical thinking, so just be a loyal soldier.
  2. Discipleship versus Propaganda: Instead of forming people spiritually—toward love, humility, compassion—it shapes them politically toward fear, dominance, and exclusion. Faithfulness gets equated with nationalism and power politics.
  3. Power over Truth: Forget biblical integrity or historical accuracy. If a lie advances the political cause, it’s baptized as truth. Don’t question the authority figures.
  4. Isolation and Insulation: CN creates ideological echo chambers in churches and communities. Question the narrative, and you’re branded not just politically wrong—but spiritually suspect. I’ve been shamed for just questioning the powers that be.
  5. Demonize the Different: Immigrants, the poor, disabled, liberals, even moderate Christians—CN vilifies them. There’s no room for disagreement. It’s black or white—usually white. And it’s terrible theology.

At times, CN may look like a wholesome return to Mayberry RFD values—safe, familiar, family-friendly. But it’s still a turd wrapped in Mom’s favorite casserole.

CN violates Jesus’ two greatest commandments: 1) Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and 2) Love your neighbor as yourself. CN can’t possibly honor the first because it places politics above faith. And it certainly fails the second—we’re not extending love to “the least of these,” or really, anyone.

When I was a boy, most people in my hometown saw themselves first as children of God, as Imago Dei—made in the image of God. Family and community came next. Politics came much further down the line, if at all. Today, Imago Dei seems to have vanished. For CN, politics is identity—and faith is simply along for the ride. When politics and faith collide, faith loses.

That’s not a cultural shift. It’s a spiritual crisis. And too few church leaders are naming it. As Imago Dei fades, political tribalism takes over demanding loyalty, not reflection. Obedience, not truth. Jesus becomes a convenient mascot for a movement that is more about power than grace.

This is idolatry—where political allegiance overshadows spiritual conviction. Shouting someone down, whether at a rally or online, may feel powerful—even addictive. But it’s an illusion. It’s not truth, or love, or righteousness. It’s a sham.

And don’t this is accidental. It’s strategic—driven by powerful ultra-conservative organizations like the Heritage Foundation, the Center for Renewing America, and Project 2025, backed by billionaires like Charles Koch and Peter Coors. The result…we’re seeing formerly thoughtful, kind, spiritually grounded people become angry, narrow-minded, and deeply suspicious of anyone who disagrees. CN love this!
